Range: restricted to an area along the coast approximately 50 km wide, from Libya as far as the Nile in Egypt.
Natural History: inhabit sandy desert regions along the Mediterranean Sea, from which this tortoise receives the humidity it requires to survive. This species will dig into the substrate at the base of bushes to protect itself from heat and desiccation. Active during the morning and evening to avoid direct sunlight.
